Double Red Karl Rosenfield Peony - Garden Peony -
This is the best red peony plant and among the most popular. It is a herbaceous, perennial plant that is native to Central Asia. Since the 7th century it has been grown in China as an ornamental plant and was introduced to North America in the 1800s. Named after the Greek physician of the gods who discovered the medicinal properties of the plants in its genus, it is indeed a stunning garden plant.
The old-fashioned hybrid has an everlasting appeal, producing vibrant cherry-red flowers with a yellow center for contrast year after year. Under the right conditions this peony can keep blooming for over 100 years. They are robust, hardy plants that require little maintenance.
This variety is a particularly easy to grow peony in fertile, well-drained soils. It will do well in full sun with part shade, when growing in hot climates. Before planting, mix compost with the soil. Embed the rootstock buds 2 inches below the surface of the soil. Ensure you provide plenty of moisture during early planting.
You can use them as border plants that create a vibrant flowering every spring. Extend the flowering period by planting a mix of early and late blooming varieties. It’s thick, tapering, tuber-like roots increase every year, so if you keep them well watered they will give fantastic blooms for seasons to come. They grow up to 3 feet in height and width.
Support the heavy 3-5” flowers by staking them, otherwise you will have beautiful red flowers that are drooped down to the ground. You can achieve this using peony rings that will be hidden by the foliage.
They are relatively pest free but they may get affected by Botyrtis and Phytopthora blight. You may notice ants on their stems but they are harmless and very common.
This garden peony will add charm to your garden with its fragrant blooms which you can cut and enjoy in a vase inside your home. Its lush foliage attracts butterflies and is rabbit and deer resistant.
