Description

Greenwood's Blueberry Viburnum - Arrowwood Viburnum -

This deciduous flowering shrub is named after its straight stems which the Native Americans would use as arrows shafts. Missouri is the only place it has been known to exist in the wild although it is fairly well spread in eastern North America.

It is an attractive shrub for your landscapes with its clusters of white flowers and dense foliage. It is easily established in medium moisture soils and requires good drainage. You may grow it in full sun with part shade although established plants have some level of drought resistance. The optimum soil to thrive in would be moist loamy soil.

Viburnum Blue Berry is characterized by many, upright stems which grow up to 6-10” tall when mature or go as far as 15” in optimum conditions. It has white flowers which have no fragrance that appear in late spring. These flowers grow in flat-topped currycombs which are about 4” in diameter. The flowers die away to give rise to viburnum berries which are not edible to humans but are quite drawing to birds and wildlife. Its deciduous leaves are very simply arranged opposite each other and have toothed edges with a glossy, dark green appearance.

Although not highly ornamental, it can survive through winter and makes the perfect viburnum hedge for privacy or define property. You can also use it as a shrub hedge plant and it would be an excellent background for native plants in your woodland garden. They add a brilliant variation of height and can be planted alongside other shorter plants for aesthetic variety. Use it innovatively by planting it around a birth bath or a bench to act as a screen for a serene environment.

Fruiting can be increased by adding another Arrowwood Viburnum variety.

Arrowwood viburnum poses no serious insect or disease problems and is quite low maintenance. Prune after flowering.
