Schizachyrium scoparium Announced as 2022 Perennial Plant of the Year

Schizachyrium scoparium - Little Bluestem - Plant of the Year 2022

The Perennial Plant Association has announced the Perennial Plant of the Year for 2022 and it is Schizachyrium scoparium and cultivars. A prairie grass native throughout the United States (except areas of California, Oregon and Washington). The upright clumps of slender, flat blue to gray green leaves with blue base begin to change in late summer to shades of deep red, purple, burgundy, orange and bronze for fall. Fluffy white seed heads last on into winter and make excellent food for birds.

Schizachyrium scoparium or commonly knows as Little Bluestem is a warm season grass that is a good choice for rain gardens, wood edging, borders, cottage gardens, meadows, prairie gardens and is tolerant of deer, drought, black walnut, dry soil and air pollution. Plant in full sun in dry to medium soil types and well drained soil.
