Butternut Trees are grown for both commercial and lumber uses. The White Walnut or Butternut generally begins producing nuts at approximately 20 years with its best years in the 30 to 60 range with decent crops every 2 to 3 years as with pecans and other walnuts. White Walnuts are more popular in culinary than as lumber, as the nuts are commonly used in baking and candy.

Butternut wood is highly rot resistant, lightweight and softer than black walnut wood. Generally used to make furniture and for woodcarving projects.
