While on our annual pilgrimage to Maine one summer, we stopped in at a seafood restaurant. Though we passed it every year, this was the first time we had eaten there. Cheryl dropped off our son and me at the door, through which a long line was already forming. Since the lot was already full, she ended up parking at the back of the lot which was not clearly visible from the highway. When she finally joined us, she told us about the gorgeous hedge in back of the restaurant.
As we were leaving, we checked out the hedge more closely and found it to be the Cedar Green Giants. We estimate them to be 12 feet high and circumference of 6 feet.
This is the most perfect hedge of Green Giants we've seen to date. Thuja 'Green Giant' is one of the fastest growing of all Conifers.
This very rare hybrid between Western Red Cedar plicata and Thuja Standishii Cedar, once established, generally average 3 to 5 feet of growth per year! Elegant and uniform, Green Giant's conical habit needs no shearing or pruning, and is cloaked in dense, dark, evergreen foliage clear to the ground - a stunning choice for a private screen.
Will enhance property values while screening unsightly areas year-around. And this is a tough, easy plant to grow, tolerating almost any soil and resistant to damage from ice and snow.
Green Giant is able to withstand drought well, exhibiting no significant pest or disease problems, and is highly deer and bagworm resistant!
Green Giant will become the outstanding alternative screening-evergreen to the disease prone Leyland Cypress in the south and to the Hemlocks that are dying throughout New England.
Plant 3 to 5 feet apart for a really fast privacy screen, otherwise 7 to 10 feet apart. Most vigorous growth will be in full sun, but it will also perform well in light shade. Eventually reaches 30 to 50 feet tall. Zones 5-9.
Fall planting on the green giants for zones 5-6, no later than mid October. Zone 7, No later then October 30th. Zones 8-9 all winter. Spring planting on green giants for zone 7 no sooner then March 15th. Zones 5-6 After April 15th.
The Cedar Green Giants will arrive healthy and ready for planting. Should they die within the first year we will replace at one half the current member price plus shipping.
Once planted with moderate care, just watering every five days or so and not fertilizing for the first year, the plants generally do well. The Green Giants are a low maintenance, easy to grow, almost no care needed plant to own.
