Iris pallida Aureo - Zebra Iris Yellow Striped -
There are many variations of the Iris but the Zebra Iris is one of the oldest and most popular garden plants. It is named after the Greek goddess of the rainbow. Its characteristic features are the fragrant soft violet-blue flowers and bright green sword -shaped leaves. It’s tri-colored foliage spots gold, yellow and deep green hues.
Growing variegated or Zebra Iris is a relatively easy task in soils that have excellent drainage. It will do particularly well in hot regions with humid summers. It needs full sun and normal, clay or sandy soils. This herbaceous perennial can grow up to heights of 2-3 feet and spreads to a width of 1.5 to 2 feet. This showy plant is shade tolerant and requires moderate care. It is a hardy plant with its flowers growing as big as 3-5 inches across. They bloom in late spring extending to early summer. They grow on sparsely-branched scapes that rise up to 40” tall.
Iris pallida Aureo has a good texture and can be grown as a border plant. You can grow it in containers and cut the flowers to use for decorative purposes in your home. It attracts butterflies and is deer and rabbit resistant.
You can maintain the plant by dividing it every three to four years in late summer. It is relatively disease resistant and poses no serious problems, but it is prone to infection from the Iris Boxer.
You may use it over open woodland gardens and for edging purposes. It is sometimes grown as a source of orris that comes from its rhizomes which is used for perfumes and air fresheners.
