Fireworks Goldenrod Solidago
Native wildflower to the United States, Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks' is a striking Goldenrod cultivar.
During late summer to early fall, this Solidago rugosa or Goldenrod delivers long beautiful spikes with bright yellow flowers that do resemble golden fireworks. Plant Goldenrod in butterfly gardens, meadows or other open areas. Choose companion plants such as pink muhly grass, rudbeckias, shasta daisies, and monardas.
Divide this strong growing perennial plant every 3 years. This Goldenrod grows best in moist, well-drained soil, but is somewhat tolerant of dry and wet soils. Cut back as blooms wither to encourage reblooming. Space 12 inches apart.
Some people believe that when in bloom Goldenrod is responsible for their allergies when it is actually another plant that blooms at the same time. Goldenrod is pollinated by insects so the pollen particles are larger than wind pollinated plants.
Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks' is the state flower of Kentucky and Nebraska.
