🌿 Choosing the Right Plants (Without Guessing)
🌿 Start With Your Space

Now that you’ve spent time understanding your space and thinking through your design… this is where everything starts to come together.
Most people begin by choosing plants they like. There’s nothing wrong with that — but it often leads to frustration later.
Instead, begin with what your space can support.
Take another look at your area:
• Is it mostly sun or shade
• Does the soil stay dry or hold moisture
• Is the area open and windy — or more protected
• How much room do you actually have
You don’t need exact answers. Just a general sense. That alone will guide you in the right direction.
🌿 Think in Roles, Not Just Plants

Instead of choosing randomly, think in simple roles:
• 🌳 Something with structure (a tree or larger shrub)
• 🌿 Something to fill in around it
• 🌸 Something that adds color or seasonal interest
• 🌱 Something low to cover the ground
You don’t need a lot of each — just enough to give your space a natural rhythm. When plants work together this way, everything feels more intentional.
🌿 Choose What Fits (Not What Forces It)

This is where confidence really starts to build.
When you’re considering a plant, ask yourself:
• Will this fit the space as it grows
• Does it match the light and soil conditions
• Will it need constant attention just to survive
If something feels like it might struggle… it probably will. There are always better choices — and those better choices are usually easier to care for.
🌿 Keep It Simple to Start

You don’t need to fill every space right away.
Start with a few key plants:
• One or two anchor plants
• A couple of supporting plants
• A simple ground layer or border
Then step back and live with it for a bit. Notice how it feels. Notice how the light moves through it.
You can always add more — but starting simple helps you get it right.
🌿 Use Repetition to Create Calm
One of the easiest ways to make a garden feel put together… is to repeat plants.
Instead of using many different types, choose a few that work well and use them more than once.
That repetition creates a sense of flow. It helps the space feel calm and connected — and it makes everything easier to maintain.
🌿 Choose Plants That Work With You
The goal isn’t to create more work. It’s to create something you enjoy.
Look for plants that are:
• Well‑suited to your region
• Naturally hardy
• Not overly demanding
• Comfortable in the conditions you have
When plants are in the right place, they don’t need constant attention. They grow, settle in, and become part of your space.
🌿 In Closing
You don’t need to know everything about plants.
You just need to:
• understand your space
• choose with intention
• and start simple
That’s how confidence grows. And once you begin to see what works… everything becomes easier.
