How to Plant Correctly (So It Actually Works)

🌿 Start With the Right Hole

This is where most problems begin.

Not with the plant—but with how it’s planted.

 

A good rule to follow:

• Dig wider than the root ball
• Not much deeper than it already is

 

Think of it this way:

👉 Roots grow outward, not straight down

Loosening the surrounding soil makes it easier for roots to settle in and spread.

 

A wide, comfortable space helps a plant establish faster.

 

🌿 Don’t Plant Too Deep

 

This is one of the most common mistakes.

When a plant sits too low in the ground, it struggles.

 

Look for where the plant meets the soil in its container.

That level should stay the same—or even slightly higher—when planted.

 

It’s better to be a little high than too deep.

 

🌿 Loosen the Roots (Gently)

 

When you remove a plant from its container, you may notice:

• Roots circling tightly
• Soil holding the same shape as the pot

 

Before placing it in the ground:

Gently loosen the roots.

You don’t need to be rough—just help them break free a bit.

 

This encourages roots to grow outward rather than continue circling.

        If roots are circling, gently loosen them before planting.

Note: Use your fingers to pull apart the outer roots lightly—no need to be rough.

🌿 Backfill and Settle the Soil

 

Place the plant in the hole and begin filling the soil back in.

As you do:

• Lightly firm the soil around the plant
• Avoid packing it down too tightly

 

You’re removing air pockets—not compressing the soil.

Once filled, give it a good watering.

 

This helps everything settle naturally.

🌿 Water Well (Right Away)

 

Right after planting:

👉 Water deeply

 

This is not a light sprinkle.

You want water to reach the root zone.

 

This helps:

• Settle the soil
• Reduce transplant stress
• Begin root contact with the surrounding soil

🌿 Add Mulch (But Keep It Away)

 

Mulch is one of the simplest ways to help a plant succeed.

It helps:

• Hold moisture
• Regulate soil temperature
• Reduce weeds

 

But keep it slightly away from the base of the plant.

👉 Don’t pile mulch against the stem or trunk

Think of mulch as a blanket—not something that smothers.

Keep mulch away from the base—think of a donut, not a volcano.

Note: 2–3 inches deep, spread evenly around the plant.

Planting doesn’t need to be complicated.

It just needs to be done correctly.

 

When you:

• give roots room
• keep the depth right
• water well

You set the plant up to succeed from the start.
