Obsidian Heuchera -
This award-winning heuchera is one of the most unique and attractive coral bells varieties. It is characterized by jet-black foliage whose shiny, dark leaves rarely ever fade throughout their growth. It is the darkest variety of heuchera to date and is praised for its vigor and consistency.
This perennial cultivar grows in clumps with basal mounds that are up to 25 cm tall, with a spread of 40 cm. Panicles of tiny, conical, white flowers appear in early to mid-summer rising up slightly above the foliage to a height of 60 cm.
The obsidian performs best when grown in well-drained soils that are rich hummus. It will thrive in alkaline, neutral or acidic soils. It also has medium moisture requirements, requiring weekly watering once established. In dryer areas, consider increasing the watering frequency to optimize performance and reduce chances of foliage decline.
Although it requires little maintenance, deadheading is important to promote further blooming. To avoid root heaving, consider applying a thick layer of mulch in winter after the ground freezes. The plant may be propagated through division. This can be done in spring after every 3 or 4 years.
This cultivar is an excellent addition to rock gardens, beds and eclectic woodland gardens. It can also be used as a border or edging plant or as ground cover. To make the most out of its striking appearance, plant it in mass. Its fantastic texture and color give the best accents when planted alongside other vivid obsidian companion plants such as lambs ear, caramel and green spice heucheras.
The obsidian heuchera coral bells are both rabbit and deer resistant, but they are very attractive to butterflies. This sturdy plant is notably easy to grow, it is also pest and disease free. It is particularly resistant to powdery mildew.
Obsidian Heuchera is grown in a trade gallon container. Orders shipping to CA or AZ may be bare rooted before prepping to ship.
