Dwarf Liriope muscari - Isabella Lilyturf -
The dwarf liriope Isabella is a hardy, grass-like plant that has gained popularity as a great lawn alternative. It forms a clump of deep green foliage that can be easily mistaken for grass. It blooms in spring in a display of tiny pink lily-type flowers that sit above the foliage. It grows to a height of 12-16 inches with a spread of 16-20 inches. It is evergreen, and very hardy, surviving well in full sun or near-full shade.
Dwarf Liriope Isabella Care
One of the reasons this liriope muscari variety is loved is because it is a very low maintenance plant, needing only one mow per year. In case you feel it looks too shabby, you can simply trim the tips of the leaves, or mow back. It is easier for the liriope Isabella lawn alternative to recover from damage as compared to other lawn plants. It does not need lots of watering either.
When planting the Isabella lilyturf, plant 6 per meter square for full lawn coverage in 1½-2 years, or 12 per meter square for faster coverage in 9 months to 1 year. It is a very tolerant plant that will survive the harsh conditions of frost or the sweltering heat and humidity of summer. It does well in any sun condition from full sun to full shade, and will also grow in any soil condition too.
The dwarf liriope Isabella lawn is a water-wise ground cover and lawn alternative. It can also be used as a border plant, around stepping stones, for mass planting, rock gardens, or also as a container plant, though there are evergreen liriope varieties that will function better as container plants. It is also deer and rabbit resistant.
Isabella Liriope grows in quart pots.
