Crocosmia Lucifer - Tropical Looking Plants -
The C. Lucifer is one of the hardiest tropical cultivars. It is characterized by blazing red-orange tubular flowers. These bloom in midsummer and are perched atop wiry, arching, scattered stems. The foliage is dark green with broad, pleated sword-shaped leaves. These provide great texture and color to your garden.
This award winning, deciduous perennial grows in fast growing clumps. It thrives in warm locations preferably in full sun, but it also does well in partial shade. It is quite versatile and will grow on different soil types and has average water needs.
Crocosmia Lucifer requires minimal care when planted in well-drained soil. Plant its fleshy root corns 2-4” deep and 6-8” apart. It is fast growing and should be divided every 2-3 years to avoid crowding. You may also lift and move complete smaller plants as an alternative to division. In winter you can apply a thick mulch to protect its roots. You may need to store it indoors in some areas where winter is extremely cold.
It reaches heights of 36-42” and spreads up to about a foot. It makes an excellent companion plant to tickseed and Siberian Iris. You can also plant it alongside Arizona Sun, Buffered Popcorn and Morning Light for volume of color and height variance.
It attracts hummingbirds and bees and makes and excellent cut flower plant. Use it as a border plant or plant in en masse for use as a focal point plant. It poses few problems with spider mites being the most common.
