Description

Elaeagnus angustifolia β€” Tough-As-Nails Windbreak, Wildlife Habitat, & Shifting Soil Anchor

The Master Grower's Overview

Engineered by nature to withstand environmental extremes where traditional landscape plants routinely fail, the Russian Olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) is the industry standard for rugged, large-scale property management. At Greenwood Nursery, we cultivate these resilient woody shrubs to optimize rapid structural root development, ensuring that when deployed, they quickly establish an unyielding, fast-growing barrier. Reaching a mature height and spread of 10 to 15 feet, this absolute workhorse variety is specifically grown to handle severe wind deflection on open plains, anchor shifting topsoil on vulnerable banks, and thrive in highly adverse, low-water configurations.

Agricultural Delivery Notice: Russian Olive is an aggressive grower and is classified as invasive in several regions. Check your local regulations before planting. Due to state-level environmental and agricultural regulations, this item cannot be shipped to Wyoming (WY).

Nursery-Grade Technical Attributes

  • High-Velocity Windbreak Excellence: Its robust branching architecture and dense habit make it a premier choice for open, high-wind corridors, offering unmatched protection for homesteads, crops, and outer property lines.

  • Extreme Environmental Tolerance: Highly adapted to thrive in low-water conditions and nutrient-deficient soils, effortlessly navigating environments with high salt, sand, or heavy alkali content.

  • Vital Winter Wildlife Support: Produces a heavy annual yield of nutrient-dense berries that serve as a crucial cold-season food source and protective nesting cover for wild turkeys, deer, and native birds.

  • Active Erosion Control: Spreads a deep, extensive, and binding root matrix that pins down loose, shifting soil on steep banks, drainage cuts, and acreage borders prone to wind or water runoff.

Cultivation & Planting Infrastructure

  • Solar & Spatial Parameters: Performs with maximum efficiency across USDA Hardiness Zones 2–9. While it shows incredible adaptability in partial shade, it is uniquely valued for its ability to maintain rapid growth velocity in intense, full-sun environments.

  • Soil Matrix & Drainage: Seamlessly integrates into a vast array of difficult soil profiles, easily tolerating heavy sand, clay, alkaline, and saline conditions where traditional conservation plants struggle.

  • Professional Spacing Grid: For a dense, fast-growing hedge or continuous privacy screen, install starter seedlings on strict 10-foot centers in a single row. For multi-row windbreaks, stagger rows 12 feet apart to allow proper air circulation while maximizing structural coverage.

  • Establishment Hydration Protocol: Exhibit outstanding, self-sustaining drought tolerance once established. Provide steady, routine moisture during the initial deployment phase to help the root system bind with your local soil matrix.

Planting Instructions

How Your Plants Are Shipped & Care Instructions

To ensure a seamless transition to your garden, please follow the specific steps below based on the type of plant you ordered:

πŸ“¦ 1. Container-Grown Plants

Our container-grown plants are shipped with fully established root systems nestled in premium potting media.

  • Unpack & Water Instantly: Carefully remove the protective packaging and check the soil moisture. Give the pot a thorough watering until moisture runs out the bottom drainage holes.
  • Acclimation Period: Place your container plant in a sheltered, partially shaded location for 2 to 3 days to help it recover from transit before moving it to full sun.
  • Planting Depth: Plant at the exact same depth it was sitting in its shipping container, gently loosening the outer roots if they are encircling the root ball.
  • Moisture Control: Keep the soil consistently damp but never soggy for the first few weeks as the roots expand.

🌱 2. Seedling & Liner Bare-Root Plants

Seedlings and liners are young, vibrant plants shipped without pots to make transit highly efficient.

  • Immediate Attention: Unpack immediately upon arrival. If you cannot plant them right away, keep the roots moist and store them in a cool, shaded location out of the wind.
  • Hydration First: Soak the roots in a bucket of water for 1 to 2 hours right before planting to wake them up.
  • Planting: Spread the roots out naturally in the planting hole. Ensure the crown (where the roots meet the stem) sits right at the soil level. Water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.

🌾 3. Groundcover Bare-Root Plants

Groundcover bare-root bundles (like Vinca minor or Sedum) are shipped dormant or semi-dormant, ready to take off once in the ground.

  • Check Moisture: Open the bundle immediately. The packing material around the roots should be damp. If planting is delayed a day or two, lightly mist the roots to keep them from drying out.
  • Soak Before Planting: Soak the root systems in water for about an hour before putting them in the ground.
  • Spacing & Depth: Plant them at the same depth they were growing previously, firming the soil gently over the roots to eliminate any air pockets. Water heavily right after planting and keep the area consistently moist until established.
