Needlepoint Ivy is a refined, tamer‑growing form of English Ivy that delivers year‑round evergreen beauty with a uniquely elegant leaf shape. Staying under 12 inches tall, it forms a lush, low‑maintenance carpet ideal for replacing traditional lawns, stabilizing slopes, and adding structure to garden beds. Its distinctive pointed foliage also makes it a favorite for creative topiary projects. Drought‑ and salt‑tolerant once established, this ivy thrives in challenging conditions while remaining manageable and attractive.

  • Excellent erosion control for slopes and banks
  • Drought‑ and salt‑tolerant once established

Description

Needlepoint Ivy (Hedera helix β€˜Needlepoint’) is a versatile evergreen groundcover known for its elegant, narrow‑lobed leaves and controlled growth habit. Unlike more aggressive ivy varieties, Needlepoint Ivy spreads steadily without overwhelming nearby plants, making it suitable for residential landscapes. Its drought and salt tolerance allow it to thrive in tough conditions, including roadside plantings, slopes, and areas where irrigation is limited. The plant’s refined foliage also lends itself beautifully to topiary frames, urns, and decorative containers.

Planting & Care

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: Prefers well‑drained soil
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment; drought‑tolerant afterward
  • Maintenance: Minimal; prune lightly to maintain boundaries or shape
  • Growth Habit: Remains under 12 inches tall; spreads steadily

Seasonal Notes

  • Evergreen foliage provides year‑round color
  • Handles heat, drought, and salt exposure once established
  • Performs well in both formal and naturalized landscapes

Ideal Uses

  • Lawn alternative for low‑maintenance landscapes
  • Erosion control on slopes and banks
  • Topiary and decorative shaping
  • Garden beds, borders, and shaded areas
