Ernest Markham Clematis Red Flowering Vine

Large 4 to 6 inch magenta-red velvet flowers with gold anthers begin opening in June to July sporadically and then in August to October in full coverage. The Ernest Markham Clematis is one of the easy to grow clematis varieties. Cover your arbors and trellises with this show stopping red flowering vine. Plant the Ernest Markham to grow up lattic panels around your patio or deck perimeter areas for seasonal privacy and enjoyment, or grow in containers in full sun to part shade with tall bamboo stakes.

How to Grow Clematis

While the plant itself can grow in full sun to light shade, the base and root system should be planted in shade. Mulch heavily to keep soil moist. Clematis need to be planted 3 inches deeper than the original pot. 'Plant' the first set of leaves to encourage the production of strong shoots from below the soil level and to discourage clematis wilt. Thank you to Walters Gardens for these wonderful tips.
