Description

Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus), also known as English Laurel, is a fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree. This versatile plant is popular for creating dense hedges and privacy screens. Known for its glossy, dark green leaves, the Cherry Laurel offers year-round interest and thrives in various soil types and shade conditions, making it a favorite among gardeners.

Key Features:

  • Evergreen Foliage: Glossy, dark green leaves provide year-round beauty.

  • Rapid Growth: Typically grows 2 feet per year, reaching up to 20 feet tall with a spread of 10+ feet.

  • Wildlife Friendly: Larval host to Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, and the fruits and flowers attract butterflies, pollinator insects, and songbirds.

  • Privacy Plant: Ideal for creating evergreen privacy screens or windbreaks.

  • Low Maintenance: Thrives in full sun to part shade and can grow in poor soil.

Additional Benefits:

  • Flowering: Produces small, fragrant white flowers in spring, followed by small black fruits that provide food for birds.

  • Toxicity Note: Leaves, seeds, and stems are toxic when ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and horses. For more information, visit the ASPCA.

Ideal Uses for Cherry Laurel:

  • Hedges and Screens: Create dense, evergreen privacy hedges.

  • Garden Structure: Adds structure and serves as a backdrop for flowering perennial plants.

  • Wildlife Gardens: Attracts pollinators and provides food for birds.

  • Erosion Control: Stabilizes soil on slopes.

Planting & Care Instructions:

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants approximately 6 to 10 feet apart for optimal growth.

  • Soil Requirements: Adaptable to various soil types.

  • Watering: Regular watering until established.

  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring.
