Felix Crousse Peony - Fragrant Peony -
Commonly referred to as the garden peony, this incredibly popular plant is a true American classic. Introduced to America in 1881, this award-winning plant adds nostalgic charm to your garden. This delightfully fragrant peony is the recipient of the Award of Garden Merit and is regarded as one of the best red varieties by the American Peony Society.
It is a herbaceous perennial plant that is fast growing and quickly extends to over 36 inches in height and 24 inches in width. It requires moderate care and makes an excellent gift plant. It is also tolerant to urban pollution. The best time to plant is in late summer to early fall to give it ample time to establish in the soil before winter. It blooms in early spring to late summer and features green foliage with red flowers. You can cut these in bud and enjoy a red peony bouquet at home with a long vase life.
The Felix Crousse peony grows best in full sun and is tolerant to partial shade later in the day. You should grow them in fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soils. The planting depth is extremely significant and will determine whether the peonies will flower. Plant the eyes 1.5-2 inches below the soil surface level and top up with compost every fall. Another factor that may cause the peony to fail flower may be the use of too much Nitrogen.
The root system takes some time to establish but once it does the plant has a lifespan of up to 50 years. Staking is required to keep the large flowers from drooping to the ground. Remove dried blooms and old foliage for neatness. The plant requires average watering. for optimum growth.
This peony may be used for borders and city gardens or as an informal hedge. You can plant it alongside Hydrangea and Phlox.
