This is a new red Echinacea variety bred to yield well- branched, closely packed, robust plants. They are also characterized by a high bud count. Their flowers grow in large, scarlet red singles with a soft fragrance. The petals on the flowers overlap to give a polished and fuller appearance. These brightly colored, cheerful plants are a mainstay for sunny gardens.

They are hardy, drought resistant perennials that are compact and quite prolific. Their showy bloom lasts for more than four weeks from late spring through to summer. They require full sun and partial shade in the afternoons and are most prolific in well drained, fertile soils. They are versatile and will adapt in any soil type as long as they do not get waterlogged. You will need to water regularly during the first planting season to establish a well-developed root system. After establishment, reduce the watering frequency.

The Echinacea Sombrero® series is fairly drought resistant and once established has a really good benching system. They reach heights of up to 24-26 inches and 16-22 inches wide making them an excellent choice for border plants. They are quite easy to grow and maintain requiring only deadheading to prevent seeding. They do not need to be divided, but should you require to divide them, do so in early spring or early fall.

This series includes exciting advances such as the Salsa Red Coneflower. These attract birds, bees and butterflies. They are deer and rabbit resistant and make excellent cut flower plants. You can also plant in them in containers in winter as patio plants. The dried seed heads are great for procreation and starting a new garden.

These prolific bloomers make good companion plants to Rudbeckia. They make a vibrant addition to Cottage and Prairie gardens. Their bouquets are also great for use as dried flowers.

Echinacea x 'Balsomsed' Plant Patent #23,105

Other companion coneflowers are the Lemon Yellow and Adobe Orange.
