Valley Forge Elm Tree - Fast Growing Shade Tree -

The Valley Forge American Elm was named after the place where Washington’s forces faced the winter in 1777, near Philadelphia. Developed by the Agricultural Research Service in Maryland in 1995 by the U. S. National Arboretum.

It is hardy and extremely adaptable. This popular, Ulmus americana deciduous native tree grows to heights of 60-80 feet, with a spread of up to 60 feet. It is typically grown as a shade tree and features dense, close-growing branches. It is probably the best choice for modern landscaping because it shows excellent Dutch Elm disease resistant.

It produces small non-ornamental flowers in spring, just before the foliage appears. The flowers then subside, leaving samaras containing one seed each. These mature in April-May. The leaves which have serrated margins and rough texture grow to a full size of about 6 inches long. Its bark is grey with flat ridges that are separated by fissures which are vaguely diamond-shaped. The best time to prune elm trees is late winter when the cold is not too extreme.

You should grow it in areas with full sunlight but it adapts surprisingly well to both dry and wet, marshy conditions. It is appropriate for planting sites such as street trees, public parks and residential areas. It should, however not be grown under power lines. The lower branches can be trimmed strategically as it grows to make room for unobstructed human activities below.

The Valley forge elm is a legacy tree whose shade you will enjoy for generations to come with an expected lifespan of up to 80 years.  It is a fast-growing tree

The elm fall color is typically yellow providing a beautiful, aesthetic variation wherever it is planted.
