Sawtooth Oak Trees For Sale

The sawtooth oak tree requires very little maitenance. Note however, that they do not perform as well in poorly drained soils or flooded soils. When underwater for 24 hours, the plant will not survive.Part of the beauty of Sawtooth oaks is the clean, glossy appearance of the foliage. It's foliage is unblemished and glossy-green all summer long. In the fall, it turns yellow, finally aging to paper-bag brown color. Oak trees often hold a lot of their foliage through the winter, shedding it in the spring as new leaves emerge.

Planting & Care for Sawtooth Oaks

When transplanting, plant the seedlings 15-20 feet apart to give enough room for optimum acorn production when the tree matures. Make sure to plant at least 15 seedlings per planting for effective pollination.

Apply a small amount of 10-10-10 or 18-8-3 fertilizer pellets to the bottom of the planting hole and cover them with 2-3 inches of soil. Do not let the roots of the seedling contact the fertilizer. Finally, clear any existing vegetation within a 3 feet radius of the seedlings to minimize competition and water and apply mulch immediately.

Heavy acorn production, even though it tends to occur in alternate years, makes the tree valuable as a wildlife food plant. Deer especially seem to enjoy these acorns. It produces acorns heavily beginning in its 5th to 6th year.

Being a large tree at maturity, Sawtooth Oak should be planted where it has sufficient room to spread. It is not picky about soil type, but faster growth will be realized in better soils such as loam or sandy. It seems to have excellent drought tolerance once established.
