Beardtongue Ruby Rock Candy -
The Penstemon barbatus plants, also commonly referred to as Beard Tongue, are hardy perennial, herbaceous plants. The Penstemon Rock Candy® Ruby variety is characterized by bold pink and white, bell-shaped blooms that grow on dense flower spikes. It also features tidy, close-packed clumps of green foliage.
Growing beardtongue is relatively easy, it requires moderate maintenance. The heat tolerant and drought tolerant plan thrives in well drained soils and full sun. It is also capable of doing well in a wide range of soils and conditions.
Once stablished, water it intermittently increasing frequency in extreme heat. You may fertilize it once a month. The moderately growing plant grows to heights of 8-12 inches and up to 18-24 inches’ width. It requires light pruning of spent flowers to encourage blooming. They usually re-bloom 4-5 weeks after trimming.
The penstemon beardtongue has plump panicles which stand out starkly against the green foliage background. This makes them perfect for growing as a border plant or along walkways. They may also be grown in containers. They produce a vibrant show of color that almost covers the entire plant in late spring to early summer.
