Bletilla striata Hardy Orchid
Bletilla striata is a hardy orchid that grows in zones 5 to 9. While this hardy orchid may not be completely winter hardy into all of zone 5, gardeners there may want to plant it in containers to take indoors during the winter months.
Commonly called Chinese ground orchid, Bletilla striata grows best in part to full shade. Warm areas such as zones 8 and 9, will see less stress on this plant if planted in mostly shade to shelter from hot summer sun. After flowering, continue to water regularly to keep the root system growing and doesn't dry out. This spring flowering perennial plant naturalizes over time.
Bletilla striata grows in the 1 to 1 1/2 foot height range with a spread up to 12 inches wide. Pink to purple blooms appear in spring (generally April to May).
Named for Luis Blet who was a Spanish apothecary who had a botanic garden in Algeciras in the late 18th century. (referenced from the Missouri Botanical Garden site)
Bletilla striata Hardy Orchids ship in 3.5 inch pots. Orders shipping to CA and AZ addresses will be bare rooted before being prepped for shipping.
