August Light Astilbe - Hybrid Astilbe -

Commonly referred to as Hybrid Astilbe, this is one of the latest red Astilbes to bloom in midsummer. It is characterized by long crimson red, delicate plumes seated on top of bushy clusters of dark green foliage that gets tinted red in spring.

This red astilbe grows up to 28 inches tall and with a 15-24 inch spread. Optimum growth conditions are rich, well drained soils with part shade to full shade. It requires medium moisture although soils should never be left to dry out. Frequent watering will see the foliage remain striking throughout the blooming season. Use a mulch to retain moisture.

Plant this astilbe by dividing it in early spring every 3-4 years to maintain robustness. These hardy perennials are very easy to grow requiring only an ample supply of water. Plant the eyes just below the soil surface. Ideally, watering should be increased as the foliage appears and plumes mature. Plants can be fertilized in late spring just before blooming.

The August Light blooms in midsummer to late summer and makes an excellent cut flower plant. It can also be used as a border plant or in mass planting to create a striking garden feature. Plant it in a pot, basket or container for use on the patio. It is excellent for shaded gardens and effective on stream and pond banks.

It is bee friendly and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, but is deer and rabbit resistant. It poses no serious insect or disease problems apart from foliage decline in hot climates.

Plant it alongside different colored garden plants with varying heights for visual variety. Popular companion plants are Hostas, Ferns, Sweet Woodruff and Variegated Solomons Seal.
