As autumn settles in, it's the perfect opportunity to prepare your garden and landscape for the coming seasons by planting bare root trees and bare root shrubs. Fall is ideal for planting these because the soil is still warm, allowing roots to establish before winter arrives. Here are some tips to ensure your fall planting is a success:
Choose the Right Spot: Select a location that suits the specific needs of your plants, such as sunlight and drainage requirements.
Prepare the Soil: Use a garden fork to loosen the soil - this will improve aeration and drainage. Mix in some aged compost or organic matter to enrich the soil - this will provide nutrients to absorb through the roots into the plants.
Proper Planting Depth: Ensure the roots are planted firmly into the hole (up to the root collar which is the slight 'line' just above the root system) and stabilized with soil mix. This helps prevent root rot and supports strong growth.
Water Wisely: After planting, water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots - add more soil mix if necessary. At this time, water at least every 7 to 10 days if rainfall is limited in your area.
Mulch for Protection: Add a layer of mulch around the base of the plants, leaving a couple inches of air space between the plant and the mulch, to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
By planting now in fall, you'll enjoy vigorous growth and beautiful blooms in the next growing season. Explore our selection of bare root trees and bare root shrubs, and start transforming your landscape today!
