Ground Hog Aronia - Dwarf Black Chokeberry -
The Aronia Melarcopa, as the Ground Hog Aronia is referred to, is the easiest way to achieve that green carpet that we all admire, and seek in natural landscapes. Super hardy, low maintenance, and a plant for the lazy among us. All those are just but a few of the thoughts that spring to mind when you think of this plant.
It grows to a short 14 inches in the garden, often requiring small spaces of up to 36 inches a plant. On the upside, this small size means that you get a denser cover of the ground, with an even spread all around the needed area.
While it works as a perfect landscaping plant, the Ground Hog Chokeberry can hardly be considered a member of the grass family. It does more than grass, after all. True to its name, the hog, it comes packed with ‘tough’ and ‘hardy’ as part of the deal. It quickly changes the drab looks of areas where no plant would dare grow, into a lush mass of small white flowers, often balancing on the edge of red leaves and glossy, deep green foliage.
There are just so many reasons why you should not miss out on the dwarf Aronia. How many people have landscape plants that produce black edible chokeberries? Join the proud class of those who appreciate durability, beauty, and ease of keeping.
How to keep this fruiting ground-cover plant thriving -
Unlike most landscape plants, this one will not cost you too much energy. There’s absolutely no pruning needed. Only then will you need to do a little trimming after bloom when the plant threatens to grow beyond its space.
You also need to provide small shaded conditions, because the plant blooms best under the shade, without the glare of too much sunlight.
