Aralia 'Sun King' - Golden Japanese Spikenard -
Perennial Plant of the Year 2020 - So few shade loving perennial plants offer such interest in the garden setting. Plant Aralia Sun King perennials at the rear and scattered among shrubs and other perennials in full to part shade.
A wonderful companion plant to hostas, heucheras and hellebores. Commonly called Golden Japanese Spikenard, this beautiful plant's foliage emerges in mid-spring with bright gold leaves with reddish brown stems. Exposed to a few hours of sun each day, the foliage will remain yellow throughout summer. In heavier shade, you will find the foliage as chartreuse or lime green. Tiny white flowers appear in late summer (usually August to September) forming purple-black berries (inedible). So few shade loving perennials produce flowers that attract honeybees.
The Sun King Aralia prefers rich organic soil that is moist but well drained. Deer Resistant. Dies back to the ground in winter like hostas and ferns. Space the Sun King Aralia plants about 3 feet apart.
Aralia Sun King is grown in one gallon pots. Orders shipping to west coast addresses may be partially bare rooted for shipping.
