Foundation Plants

Foundation Plants | Plants for Foundations

Here you will find a selection of landscape shrubs and hedge plants that are commonly used as foundation plants. Plant and shrubs used for planting along the foundations of homes and buildings soften their look, enhance curb appeal and tie it into the surrounding landscape.

Read more on selecting foundation shrubs and bushes in our article at the bottom of the page.

Some considerations to keep in mind when choosing foundation plants and shrubs are:
       - Style/Color
       - Size
       - Scale
       - Seasons

The style of your house should be one of the biggest factors in the selection of plants and shrubs. For example, a colonial house should have different foundation plants compared to a house that might be southwest style or modern style. A colonial house would have more traditional growing bushes and shrubs such as boxwoods, whereas the southwest style home would have spikey type plants to give more of a desert feel with the modern house having free growing plants and shrubs.

Choose companion plants with colors that compliment the colors of the house without blending into it. A red brick would absorb bushes with colorings such as the Cistena Plum Shrubs with its deep red leaves. Yet, those same plants will appear striking along side a white or cream colored house. The gorgeous blooms of the Nikko Blue Hydrangea would be lost in front of blue vinyl siding.

Typical foundation plants are generally smaller growing shrubs (under 6 feet) and anchored on the corners with larger growing shrubs or small trees. The length of the windows usually dictate the height for most foundation plants. If the windows on the house start at 3 feet above the ground, then select small shrubs that will grow no more than 3 1/2 feet tall. Placing taller plants in front of windows is a security hazzard. For taller growing plants for use as anchor plants, visit our Accent Plants department and filter the selection down to the heights of 6 to 10 feet and 10 to 15 feet, your zone, light requirements, etc. for your own plant selection.

Scale is a consideration most forgotten. Small houses should have small shrubs and bushes to keep iwithin their scale and not overwhelm the house as the plants grow and mature. Large scale houses can comfortably have larger growing plants without the house disappearing behind the plants.

Foundation plants should offer color and texture for at least 3 seasons if not all 4. This is the reason that evergreen trees and evergreen shrubs, both conifers and broadleafs, are often used. Try to plant at least 50% of the foundation bushes and shrubs as evergreens to keep greenery around the house hroughtout the year. Deciduous foundation plants create a bare house over the winter months.

Selecting a few choice flowering shrubs or small trees, perennials, bamboo plants and ornamental grasses will further extend color and texture into the other seasons.
