Lavandula stoechas 'Kew Red' is a fun addition to our lavender family. Also referred to as Rabbit Ears or Butterfly Lavender, the Kew Red Lavender is typical of a Spanish Lavender with its pineapple-like shaped blooms and pink bracts at the top. Where the English and French Lavenders produce tall spikey blooms, the blooms on the Kew Red remain more compact with the plant itself.
Kew red lavender is a show stopper paired with ornamental grasses, or as a stand alone in your rock garden. The talent for this lavender lies in its beauty as it is not as fragrant as the English or French Hybrid Lavenders. While it does not attract as many butterflies and hummingbirds, it is a favorite with honeybees with its fuchsia colored blooms.
Grows two foot tall with a two foot spread, blooming from mid-may till frost. Plant in well drained soil in full sun. Prune after blooming. The Kew Red grows better in humid areas than most other lavender varieties.
