Water Oak, or Quercus nigra, is a North American native tree that is widely used as a shade tree in the south. One of the prettiest of the Southern Oaks, the Water Oak is adaptable to many areas that other trees will not favor. As its name indicates, this tree grows in wet sites, but also grows beautifully in well drained soils. A favored shade tree, it is widely planted as an ornamental. The Water Oak is easily transplanted and used widely in urban areas.

Since it produces an acorn crop almost every year, water oak is an important species for wildlife food production. Water oak acorns are a major food source for whitetail deer, squirrels, raccoons, pigs, wild turkeys, mallards, wood ducks, and quail. In wintertime, deer will browse the buds and young twigs.
