Pin Oak, or Quercus palustris, is probably the most widely used native oaks for landscaping. Pin Oaks are one of the fastest growing oaks, 12 to 15' over a 5 to 7 year period. Pin Oak can also be used in a wetland environment. The Pin Oak is pictured here in its fall color.
The mature tree is distinctive from a distance with its ascending upper branches, horizontal middle branches, and drooping lower branches. The Pin Oak grows in wet, often poorly drained soils of bottomlands and swamps.
Pin oak has moderate water requirements and has a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils. Easy to transplant and tolerates most soil conditions and partial shade to full sun.
