Pin Oak, or Quercus palustris, is probably the most widely used native oaks for landscaping. Pin Oak is one of the faster growing oaks, 12 to 15' over a 5 to 7 year period. Pin Oak can also be used in a wetland environment. Pin Oak is pictured here in its fall color.

The mature tree is distinctive from a distance with its ascending upper branches, horizontal middle branches, and drooping lower branches. The round acorns are the smallest of Ohio's oak trees. The Pin Oak grows in wet, often poorly drained soils of bottomlands and swamps.

Although widely distributed throughout Ohio, it probably is most abundant in the southwestern part of the state. The strong, close-grained wood warps and checks badly in drying and has limited uses for timber. Various wildlife, including Wood Ducks, feed on the acorns.

Pin oak has moderate water requirements and has a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils.
Easy to transplant and tolerates most soil conditions and partial shade to full sun.

Tree or trees can be purchased seperately, however for best results we recommend using the survival pack.
