Little Bluestem grass, schizachyrium scoparium, is one of the more interesting warm season grasses. Little Bluestem grass offers beautiful blue-green foliage during the growing season changing to a rusty color with beautiful white fluffy seed heads in fall. An unusual grass, the Little Bluestem will grow in full sun to partially shaded areas and once established is drought tolerant. While Little Bluestem prefers soil with a pH of 7.0, it will grow in most any well-drained area with medium to dry infertile soils. Perfect for naturalizing, Little Bluestem provides coverage for ground birds and small mammals. Songbirds eat little Bluestem seeds. With the Little Bluestem growing near the 3-foot height range, plant it in groupings of 3 or more plants for a beautiful winter scene. This warm season grass makes a great border planting and is a wonderful contrast with other perennials such as daylilies and daisies. Greenwood offers the Little Bluestem as heavily rooted plants grown in gallon containers (trade gallon). They are the perfect addition for both new and established gardens. Because they offer multi seasonal impact for the landscape, they qualify as one of our choices as an investment landscape plant.
