Handling Plants on Arrival Open your box(es) the same day that they arrive. Check each item according to the enclosed statement, as most all orders are shipped complete. Some bare root plants bundled into multiples before being root wrapped. Basic Site Preparation It is easier to make site adjustments before anything is planted. If the area hasn’t been utilized for sometime, the soil/ground may need to be “loosened up." Bamboo Planting and Care Instructions Bamboo plants actually require very little maintenance. They prefer organic soil that drains well but still retains a little moisture with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Planting and Care Instructions for Blueberries Blueberry shrubs can grow and fruit for generations with a little regular maintenance. Brambles Blackberry plants will fall into one of two types: the ones that grow in an upright erect habit and the trailing ones that need support or trellising. Daylily Planting and Care Instructions Daylilies can be planted in spring or fall. Space them about 1 ½ to 2 feet apart. Dig the hole a few inches deeper that the depth of the clump itself. If any green foliage is still on the plant, keep it above ground. Hosta Planting and Care Instructions Hostas are generally though of as shade tolerant plants. However, most will not fare well in deep shade. They prefer an exposure with morning sun and afternoon shade. Ornamental Grasses Planting and Care Ornamental grasses are as close to maintenance free as a plant can get. Whether planted in large groupings, hedges or tossed into the landscape for texture and color, they make great focal points as well as accents. Perennial Planting and Care Instructions Perennials should be planted in an area of the garden/landscape that has good air circulation. This will help avoid or cut down on disease problems. Planting Peonies Peonies are hardy in zones 2 through 8. They typically grow 2-4 feet tall with a 3-4 foot spread when mature. Peonies are long lived plants once established and maybe left undisturbed for many years. Planting Apple Trees Apple trees need full sun for proper growth and quality fruit production. At least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day is required. Planting Cherry Trees The sweet cherry produces larger sized trees about 30 to 40 feet tall. The branches grow in an upright position and are more tolerant of low temperatures than peach trees and when happy can live for more than a century. Planting Grapevines Grapevines are self pollinating, so, you don’t need different varieties or actually more than one plant to produce fruit. Planting Ground Covers Most ground covers take about one year to establish and actually begin filling in an area. After established though, they need very little maintenance. Planting Herbs Most all herbs prefer loose soil. If you have clay or compacted soil, you will need to loosen it by adding in sand mixed with organic matter. Planting Peach Trees Peach trees are self pollinating and do not require another peach tree variety for fruiting. Peach trees need full sunlight and should not be shaded by any surrounding buildings or trees. Planting Pear Trees Pear trees need to be planted in locations where the ground is slightly elevated and sloping. Like apple trees, they are susceptible to the frosty air that settles in the lower lying areas during spring. Planting Shrubs Many shrubs and roses can be planted 2-4 feet apart depending on the variety width at maturity. Planting Strawberry Plants Strawberries grow best in well drained soil that has been amended with organic matter. Planting Trees In planting trees, consideration should be given to their mature height in spacing. Smaller growing trees, such as dogwoods and redbuds, generally mature in the 15 to 25 foot tall range (depending on variety), while other trees such as maples, oaks..
