NEW! Amelanchier x grandiflora‘Autumn Brilliance’ (PP5,717) Many of our members have purchased the native Amelanchier Canadensis - Serviceberry that we offered last season.
This season we are proud to present the Apple Serviceberry – Autumn Brilliance. This plant is a cross between the two foremost serviceberry plants; the Amelanchier Canadensis and Amelanchier Laevis. Now you may wonder what is so special about this particular plant. Well, it grows from 15 to 25 foot tall with multiple stems forming a dense shrub or if pruned properly a small tree.
It is a superior plant to the species because it suckers less (less work) and is adaptable to a very wide range of soils. It is also somewhat drought tolerant.
Its spectacular show of white flowers in early spring, that are larger then other Amelanchier’s is one of its main ornamental features. They begin to flower as a pale pink then fade to snowy white fragrant flowers. Its young leaves are purplish in color then turn red, orange, and yellow in the fall. The fruit is round, sweet and edible in summer, about ½ inch in size, and fleshy. Good for the wildlife and also for human consumption.
To sum it up, here is an easy to grow plant, featured in many of the gardening and landscape magazines this season; Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Living, and English Gardens, just to name a few. Although featured, it is not readily available to the general public though the garden center level.
We are proud to offer this plant in a large one-gallon size. Generally, they will range in size from one to two feet, well-branched and well rooted in the pot, and at a very special price.
