Flowers alone aren't enough to make a great garden. Small trees and shrubs, especially the ones that flower - such as crabapples, lilacs and hydrangeas - are the backbone of your landscape, as are shade trees and evergreens. Woody plants fill your land- scape with added height, color and texture all year. The best small trees and shrubs have flowers in the spring or summer, attractive leaves in the summer, and then in autumn, interesting berries or colorful foliage (or both). Attractive woody plants are also indispensable for adding shape and texture to the winter garden.
