Lindera benzoin - Spicebush - A broad, rounded multistemmed shrub covered with fragrant yellow-green flowers in early spring. The flowers open before the leaves emerge and are held close to the branches. Aromatic light green leaves turn deep yellow-gold in fall. Birds feed on the small, brilliant red fruits formed on female plants.
The fruits of Spicebush are shiny red berries called drupes. Birds, including American Robin, Northern Bobwhite, Gray Catbird, Eastern Kingbird, and Great Crested Flycatcher, eat the drupes. Raccoons and Virginia Opossums eat them too.
Can be planted in grouping 5 to 10 plants, or in a hedge about 3 feet apart.
Sold in multiples of 10, 20, and 30 plants.
Good for zones: 4-9
