Cercis canadensis 'Covey' PP #10328, LAVENDER TWIST tmWeeping Redbud Photo courtesy US Botanic Garden, Washington, DC This unusual cultivar is sure to delight anyone who decides to make this an addition to their landscape. The two smaller photos are of the parent or mother tree, one in spring and one in winter. The Mother tree is about 45 years old and 5 foot tall. Photo of Mother trees are courtesy of Tim Brotzman About two or three years ago one of our friends in the nursery industry told us about a weeping Red Bud that had been discovered in the little town of Westfield, N.Y., located along the south shore of Lake Erie, west of Niagara Falls. Of course we were thrilled, because to us a weeping variety of a species that we are familiar with is uncommon and exciting. It was then that our friend started to put them into production. This unique form of our native redbud is one of only a couple of weeping forms commercially available. Along with a weeping habit, stems are somewhat contorted and spreading, resulting in an attractive and unusual mounded canopy. Branches tend to grow horizontally before drooping at the tip. Lavender-pink flowers emerge on the dark stems before the leaves in early spring. It displays blue-green foliage in the summer, and yellow to golden-bronze color in the fall. Still having the bright pinkish purple pea-like flowers of the species, it provides a splash of color any time between mid-April and mid-May in central Ohio. Fall color is usually yellow-brown but some years can be a nice yellow. The Value: Our Lavender Twist Red Bud is a hardy budded tree. First year: The root stock is grown from seed that sprouts in spring and grown one complete season, using hardy northern grown red bud parentage. They are harvested when dormant and graded to select the best for transplanting in the field. Second year: The healthiest seedlings are transplanted in the field and budded in August with the patented Lavender Twist buds from healthy growing trees. Third year: In spring the dormant bud begins to grow around April 15th or after the last frost. The healthy bud that takes begins to leaf out and the new tree begins to grow. As it begins to grow this third growing season, it is professionally staked.

An incredible ornamental tree. As a specimen or perfect for the small garden. The advantage is in the deep maroon color lasting all summer long.
