Deutschland Astilbe - False Spirea -

Commonly referred to as the False Spirea, this clump-forming perennial is a mainstay of shaded and woodland gardens. It features elegant fern-like mounds of basal, ternate compound leaves. The leaves are often sharp-toothed and the flowers tiny but densely packed into arching panicles which rise above the foliage on slender, straight stems.

Named for their lack of brightness the white astilbe has lacy, pure white, open plumes. Its foliage is bold, glossy and deep green in color. the green leaves are often tinged with red. This plant requires quite a bit of maintenance with consistent water needs. Optimum growing conditions are fertile soils and light shade to filtered sun. They need a bit of sunlight and will not bloom prolifically in full shade. You should be careful not to let the soil dry out because the leaves will turn brown at the margins and droop.

Astilbe Plant Care:

Fertilize in late spring before flowering commences and increase watering as the foliage begins to show and the plumes start to mature. Cut back the old foliage in spring to protect the plant from winter damage. Should the crown rise above the soil level in spring, gently press it back to the ground and apply organic humus around it. Use a shade cloth to reduce stress on the plant.

Plant it in soils with a pH of 5.8-6.2 with temperatures of 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit for the first week. You can increase temperatures to speed up flowering or lower to delay blooming. This astilbe is sensitive to salts and may become scorched or have the roots damaged if soluble salts build up.

Plant it alongside fanal astilbe or Helleborus for variety in your garden.
