Description

Sawtooth Oak Trees

Part of the beauty of Sawtooth oak trees is the clean, glossy appearance of the foliage. It's foliage is unblemished and glossy-green all summer long. In the fall, it turns yellow, finally aging to paper-bag brown color. Young trees of Sawtooth oak tend to hold much of their foliage through the winter, shedding it in the spring as new leaves emerge.

Heavy acorn production, even though it tends to occur in alternate years, makes the tree valuable as a wildlife food plant. Deer especially seem to enjoy these acorns. It produces acorns heavily beginning in its 5th to 6th year.

The Sawtooth oak is hardy in zones 5 to 9 and seems to ignore any serious insect or disease problems. Being a large tree at maturity, it should be planted where it has sufficient room to spread. It is not picky about soil type, but faster growth will be realized in better soils such as loam or sandy. It seems to have excellent drought tolerance once established.
