Mary Washington Asparagus is an heirloom asparagus variety. As the name implies, it is a female plant which will produce ferns with seeds at the end of its growing season.

Plant your potted Mary Washington Asparagus in mounds or trenches that are approximately 6 to 8 inches deep and 12 to 14 inches wide. Rows can be placed 3 to 4 feet apart. Space your plants on 12 inch centers within the trench. Remove the plant from it's pot and place in trench. The crown of your asparagus plant (base of the plant itself) should be approximately 3 inches below the surface. The deep planting allows the plant to produce strong thick stalks.
